This year alarming news circulated in the public domain that world-wide the production of cycloheximide is stopped. A non-availability of cycloheximide would have affected Listeria Enrichment broth (LEB),  Buffered LEB , Oxford agar and Legionella media.
Standardisation bodies (ISO, NORVAL, AFNOR, FDA, USDA-FSIS) have been alerted and requested to change standards, such as, ISO 11290  part 1 and 2 ,  IDF 143, FDA BAM.

Fortunately, Cycloheximide is again produced and can again be purchased,  for example, at Calbiochem.

There is no need to re-formulate supplements due to non availability of cycloheximide.

There is no need to change protocols, standards  and start an expensive validation procedure.

There is no need, as is done by culture media manufacturers, to replace cycloheximide by amphotericin B  (toxicity class Xn+)  or natamycin (also known as pimafucin, or pimaricin). The different formulations that recently became available  do not contribute to the standardisation of methods.

In the next weeks all cycloheximide containing culture media and supplements will again be available from Merck.

Kind Regards
Dr Peter van Netten
