Description
This method describes a horizontal procedure to detect Salmonella in foods. The method is qualitative. Four separate steps are required to detect Salmonella, namely pre-enrichment, selective enrichment, isolation by plating on selective media and confirmation. These steps are necessary because Salmonella often occurs in low numbers, sometimes sublethally injured, and often in the presence of much greater numbers of other bacteria of the order Enterobacterales.
This NMKL method has been validated in an interlaboratory study.
