Requirements of NRLs
According to the European control regulation, i.e. the Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 of the European Parliament of the Council on official controls performed to ensure the verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules, Article 33, the members states are to appoint national reference laboratories (NRL’s) in different areas.
The Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 is now replaced by the Regulation (EU) 2017/625.
A document named “Interpretation of laboratory aspects of Regulation 2017/625 on official controls and other official activities” has been elaborated by a subgroup of the EU Heads of Food Safety Agencies (HoA) Steering Group on official controls, specifically reviewing issues related to food safety laboratories, contributing to implementation of the OCR.

(The NMKL document “A Nordic Interpretation of the Control Regulation regarding National Reference Laboratories (NRL) and Official Laboratories (OFL)” was thus withdrawn in 2024.)
