Description
Shigella is often present in low numbers and difficult to detect. This method describes the detection of Shigella spp. in foods by enrichment and plating on solid media. A voluntary acid treatment of the enrichment broth is described. The acid treatment will in many cases reduce the background flora that can hide Shigella which are present in the sample. The method can be applied to all types of foods and water. In outbreak situations or with sporadic cases it can be useful to use the culturing method in parallel with NMKL 174, 2016 (Shigella spp. real-time PCR for the detection in foods).
